Imagine mother and daughter chocolate labs, always having lived together, dumped at a horrible Kentucky shelter. Not knowing where their family was or why they were left. This is what happened to Brittany (6 or 7) and Duchess (4). They have now found new homes, but what a story they have to tell!! Luckily, someone got them out of there and up to us. Duchess came first, right before Christmas, because she was heartworm + and needed a foster home. She was very anxious and barked constantly, until she was hoarse. Her foster had a rough first week with her, but she settled down and came back to be spayed and put up for adoption a month later. At that time, we got to meet her mom, Brittany, who finally made her way up from Kentucky. She was in horrible condition, with a very bad ear infection and horrible coat, but always so happy. We made sure she was reunited with her daughter, if only for a short time, and what a joy it was to see them back together. They were so happy!! We came to realize Duchess had such a hard time that first week because she had never been separated from her mother.
Duchess, now Kate, was adopted very quickly by a wonderful man, who had just lost his older dog. He has let us know Kate has changed his life and is a joy every day. She lives in a high-rise on Lake Shore Drive in Chicago and is the best mannered dog in the building. Everyone who meets her, loves her. She is living the high life!!
Brittany, now Remi, stayed with us a little longer. She became a shelter favorite very quickly. Always a happy, well-behaved, sweet lady. She found her way into the hearts of a family in Wisconsin. They made the trip out to meet her and fell in love. She is doing great in her new home and shows them how much she loves them every day!!
Every once in a while we see bonded dogs come into shelters. We would love to see them stay together, but the reality of staying together is not in their favor. Finding them wonderful forever homes, even if they can’t be together, is their reality. That is all they ask . . . to have a home where they are loved as part of a family and be able to love in return. We know these two have found those homes. They look very comfortable in their new homes. Lucky girls!!
